Is a safe way to go? I use it and so far haven't had any problems with it.

The biggest downside I can see with AOL is that many businesses, Orange County Public Schools included, have blocked the entire AOL domain from their servers. Even though you can manage AOL parental controls from AOL's website, in many locations you would find yourself unable to make modifications from work. That was one of the chief reasons that I chose SafeEyes as the solution for my program. In many ways the features of SafeEyes are similar to the controls present on AOL, however what separates SafeEyes from the pack is it is highly unlikely that the company's homepage would be blocked by any business filtering program. That means that you can access it virtually anywhere.

One of the other drawbacks on AOL is the inability to select from a wide range of blocking categories which makes AOL somewhat inflexible when trying to setup the computer for different age groups. When modifying parental controls you are only given a you are given 4 age group choices and AOL decides what is appropriate in each. SafeEyes lets you decide for each category if you want to log, block or receive an alert by email or cell phone text message if your child's activity becomes dangerous.

For a free program AOL is certainly a strong parental control tool. With software such as SafeEyes you are paying for the additional features such as blocking and logging by category as well as the alert system. Although, my program backs SafeEyes, AOL will clearly do a good job of monitoring children online.

Here is a link to a recent Consumer Reports article which does an excellent job of comparing both the free and fee based parental controls.
